Complete transformation with a well powered balanced output such as the Dx200 or the L3Pro. Sound . The sound I hear is through my 57 year old ears, so my ears are well 'burned in' and probably not perfect. It is a 24 strand braided OFC cable with TPE used to protect from unnatural coloring from oxidization, corrosion, and aging. The next logical upgrade from there was the FiiO E17, which I appreciated but soon found it a bit lacking in sound quality after I was exposed to other audio equipment. Certain percussion passages do lack a little bite with a slightly sucked out upper mid-range and muted lower treble transition from 3-5k. The FiiO F9 headphones are clearly superior to the FiiO F5. These things, for $65, shocked me at how good they are. Fiio F5 review: Value for money earphones that pack a punch Fiio F5 are one of the most comfortable pair of in-ear headphones priced at Rs 4,999 with pretty clear mids and highs You'll always know which is which though, as the right hand side has a control unit approx 10cm from the cable exit. Upper mid-range is elevated past what would be considered balanced and if sensitive at 2-3 kHz may appear mildly peaky. There is still extension there between 7-10 kHz – its just not emphasised. I have one ear canal slightly different to the other one (my right is very slightly smaller) - so I tend to find that usually single silicon flanges don't seal overly well. The only thing I will say about the sound of F5 is it's not bad - They are not a full size stereo system, they are not full size headphone and they don't cost like a full size stereo system. The graphs below are generated using the Vibro Veritas coupler and ARTA software. I tend to be sceptical about audiophile ‘claims’, don’t generally believe in burn-in, have never heard a difference with different cables, and would rather test myself blind on perceived differences. There are 3 vents or ports in the internal face of each IEM shell, and a further port adjacent to the arm holding the MMCX connector socket. The Oriveti Basic surprised me when I reviewed it recently, and with EQ can really sound quite stunning. I could have used a number of different DAPs but I'd been using the X7 a lot, and simply wanted consistency. FiiO FH1 vs Shure SE215 Comparison Review In the Box Inside the DAC/amp was secured with foam on each end to protect the switches, knob, and connectors. The drivers are encased in a very thick and well-insulated foam tray, also inside the hard case. The FiiO F5 doesn’t need amplification for overall volume – and because its impedance isn't overly low, any source with an output impedance of less than 4 ohms should pair OK. Despite the fairly long stems of the F5 MMCX connectors, they do not actually push into the helix or antihelix ridges in a way that would create any sense of discomfort. People will find this a forgiving top end in single ended mode. The box steers away from their recent dalliance with white fused packaging and instead goes back to black which I think just ups the allure on the retail shelf a little. Here are my very subjective personal thoughts: FiiO F5 (~USD 70) vs Meze 99 Classic (~USD 79). The depth of the F5 is approx 16mm from the interior face to the outer arm (holding the cable socket).
